چکیده

The characterization of ATM traac is very important in many aspects such as validating traac models, designing congestion control algorithms, implementing communication protocols, and developing switch architectures. In this paper, we present measurements of applications obtained from the High-Speed Networking and Performance Lab (HSNP) at Michigan State University. These applications are selected based on studies of Wide-Area TCP/IP traac measurements conducted by Danzig et al. 1, 2, 3]. Experimental results designed to investigate traac characteristics from a large amount of data collected, are discussed. Traac descriptors such as peak rate and mean rate are calculated from the gathered data. These descriptors are used to deene parameters for an ATM LAN/WAN workload model. A procedure for developing this workload model is presented. Cumulative distributions of the measured data are compared to those of simulated data as a way to validate the ATM workload model. A statistical test shows that there is no signiicant diierence between the simulated data and the measured data. This workload model can be used to generate diierent types of application traac in an ATM LAN/WAN. Such model is also useful for studying communication protocols, scheduling algorithms, and congestion control schemes for ATM networks.

Operations Measurements for Engineering Support of High - Speed Networks with Self - Similar

Traac engineering for high-speed packet networks is necessary to ensure that provisioned capacity i s suucient to meet anticipated demand for a broad range of ooered services, but not so excessive a s t o render services uneconomical. Currently most packet-based networks, including Internet, Frame Relay, and ATM networks, are engineered and managed either using traditional circuit-switched meth...

Design of an ATM Shaping Multiplexer withGuaranteed Output

In order to utilize network resources eeectively while providing satisfactory quality of service (QoS) to all users on the ATM network, it is necessary to control users' traac at the network edges. ATM traac may be controlled at the User-Network Interface (UNI) and Inter-Network Interface (INI) based on the traac contracts. We propose an ATM shaping multiplexer along with its implementation arc...

Using ATM Virtual Private Networks for the Internet Data Tra cCarlos

Several schemes for the transport of Internet data traac over ATM are currently being investigated by researchers as well as by standardization bodies. Typically, the main focus of these investigations has been on addressing and switching strategies. Relatively little attention has been given to the eecient allocation, utilization and management of the underlying ATM bandwidth, and to the eecie...

Preprint 0 (2000) ?{? Call Admission Control with Fractal Traac: Theory and Practice

In networks that support quality of service (QoS), a call admission control (CAC) algorithm determines whether or not a new traac ow can be admitted to the network such that all users will receive their required performance. Such an algorithm is a key component of multiservice networks, e.g., ATM, because it determines the extent to which network resources are utilized and whether the promised ...
